First Football Game 2015

Tonight was Evan’s first start in a Varsity football game. He played really hard tonight. I was very proud of him. In then end they lost, but Evan did an amazing job. He had some beautiful plays. Christian was able to come home from K-State to watch. Eric wanted so bad to be there, but work sent him nearly to Colorado this week so he wasn’t able to make it back. It was a strange night for a football game. I was in shorts. It was pretty warm for football. I know before the season is over I will be huddling under a blanket at games!

Happy Holidays

Well, my week vacation is nearly over. Have to work at the nursing home this weekend, but I did get to have Christmas off. So that was super cool. The boys had lots of fun, loved their gifts. The Kindle Fires and the iPod Touch haven’t had much downtime since Christmas morning. We were able to totally shock LC with a Letterman’s Jacket. Momo, Mufa, and Nana all helped pitch in and we were able to get it in before Christmas. Now, as LC puts it, it just needs to get cold enough to wear it. Who would have thought it would be nearly 60* around Christmas? Cole decided he needed his own room, so we did some rearranging upstairs and made it happen. He now has the coolest pad in the house thanks to the claw foot tub turned reading/relaxing area. Plus we got rid of about a dozen boxes of out grown, unloved shoes, clothes, and other misc. items. Now, just need to work a little more on the down stairs. Man we are all somewhat pack rats! Guess I know my New Year’s Resolution. De-cluttering will be priority #1.

What a Week!!!!

Well what a week!! We have done LOTS of canning with the cooler weather. Got the big boys started off to school. Mom got to start school too, at least for a few days and then I will get a little bit of a last huzzah before buckling down and getting back into the swing of things, school, work, scouts, football and everything else. Eric and Russ have been working in OK. They are beginning to think that OK is not real conducive to a full work week. The project this week took longer than anticipated due to the weather. But LORD knows we needed the rain and I am sure OK did too.

Canning this week has been wonderful. All of the boys have been great helps. I just hope that this is a skill they will continue as they get older. We did peaches, peach puree, & tomatoes early in the week, and then today did peach jam, green beans, and tomatoes. We are doing a good job getting a nice little stockpile going for winter. I think the peach puree will make awesome fruit roll ups! We have also been dehydrating the little onions from the garden, I think we are going to get the last of them on the dehydrator tonight.

Christian and Evan started school this week, much to their dismay. But it’s been ok. Christian has a good friend or two in each class, he has decided that AP Chemistry isn’t going to be quite as horrible as he thought. He has 5 AP/Honors classes this year. And that is only because the non AP/Honors classes he is taking don’t have the availability.  He is really excited about his American History class, he can get college credit for that one, he says his teacher is so Cool! Evan is making new friends and is loving school too. They are set up on a block schedule just like the HS so he had Red Day and Black Day. He seems to be adjusting fine. Both boys can’t wait till football practice starts Monday. Evan right after school and Christian has 2 a days next week, but they are later in the evening. I think they give them a couple of hours to go home, do some school work before coming back, since they are there rather late. So it will be late nights for us next week. Thank goodness Cole isn’t in school yet, will be a little easier for him that way. I guess I better plan ahead for supper next week. We will need to eat in town since they will be late nights. Need to get back in the menu planning thing.

Well, I have to work tomorrow. So I need to get things finished up and get the boys lined up for tomorrow. We will have another busy week next week too.

Saturday Successes

We did get Nana’s AC fixed, Eric & Russ did that, we did find a microwave. At this neat little thrift store that I don’t go to often. It is an OLDER microwave, but they did let me plug it in and try heating water in it. So it worked and hopefully will give me some time to look into a newer microwave a little better. We drove all the way to Pome on the Range, after we had called & asked about green beans. We got there and the lady thought we were nuts,  she didn’t think there were any green beans available, but we could probably pick okra. I was not impressed, 100+ miles round trip, nearly a 1/4 tank of gas, and 2 wasted hours! Don’t think I will be going to Pome any more.

Busy Weekend

Well it looks like we will have a quite busy weekend ahead. Nana’s AC fan motor went out last night, so Eric & Cody are trying to find one for her so they can get her AC going. Found some wonderful peaches when we took the boys in to mow at Momo’s this morning. They need a couple of days yet and then we are making jam, jelly, and maybe some peach sauce. I am thinking that peach would be an AWESOME base for fruit leather. My goal this summer/fall to get some fruit sauces made so we can do quick and easy fruit leather. I think that would be great lunchbox fillers, snacks for bus rides for games ect. Cole wants to play soccer this fall, so we will try that out too.  Man it looks like I am going to be  busy. I am really hoping LC will just get Varsity for FB, I know a long shot, but really 2 games a week just for him? Don’t know if I can handle all that!!!! Once we get back to town I am going to call and see if we can go and pick green beans at an orchard. Know the boys aren’t too impressed, made them mow at 8 AM so they wouldn’t be mowing in the heat. LC asked, “why would we pick green beans this afternoon? It’s HOT!” I know, but in theory they should pick faster! Don’t you think? Anyway, I did promise them Apple Cider Slushies if they did a good job, heck, even if they don’t do a good job they will probably still get the slushies, never seem to leave the orchard with out everyone getting one anyways. I am on a quest for green beans. I LOVE fresh canned green beans. We looked at the farmers market, but were kinda late getting there and we didn’t see any. There was a TON of Wonderful looking tomatoes. We are still getting a few, and still have some ripening on Momo’s table, so I didn’t get any. I am hoping that once the HEAT WAVE leaves the tomato plants will kick it up a notch. I have a TON of blossoms still setting on. TJ has done a wonderful job keeping them alive this summer in this heat. I also need to look for a microwave when we go back to town. I had picked one out the other day, one that would fit my DCB. Went to get it today with my muscle men, and guess what, they didn’t have any. Just my luck. I swear there were 7 of them there the other day. Oh well I guess if I  have to wait till I go to Topeka and get one there I will. I need to get some lunch box stuff up to my sister and go to Sam’s to get some scripts filled anyways. Looks like a busy week before the big boys start school. Wonder what CA will think about it being just him & mom again for a while???

Summer Canning

Well I have been busy canning this week. Tomatoes and pickles. Eric said the pickles turned out good. The last batch of my tomatoes are still going. Will have ended up with 22 pts for the week. Not bad considering the heat and the chickens. I picked a few more greenish tomatoes today from the plants. Hoping that if I set them out to ripen at moms that will lessen the load on the plants with this heat and allow them to keep growing and producing. We did have some pretty tiny Brandywine. Cole was calling them midgets. The boys are really beginning to get this canning thing down. Christian is the bomb. Tonight he finally figured out how tight to get the bands on. I think he was afraid that he would get them too tight. Our jars are nice & colorful. I got some yellow tomatoes this year and the ones that are called Pineapples have really done well. Since I am lazy and want to spend as little time in the hot kitchen we have been canning the all the tomatoes together. I really like the look of them in the jars when they are done. Very pretty. I did save a big Brandywine to eat. Need to find some black rye bread, or make some. I have a real craving for a black rye & tomato sandwich. Now the boys would defiantly not approve, but they don’t know what they are missing. I don’t remember ever not liking tomatoes, so this crazy fetish the boys have about not liking tomatoes is driving me nuts! They pour ketchup on everything. Oh well they say you have to eat something multiple times to really enjoy it, so I guess I will keep plugging along on the tomatoes with the boys. They are sooooooo good this year. I wish I had more to preserve. Need to be getting some peaches. I am wanting to make some jam and then can some too. They always taste so much better when we can get them fresh.
